For many elders in Edmonton, the hardest part of staying healthy isn’t the illness. It’s understanding the system. Literacy barriers can turn a routine check-up into a stressful day. The good news: small steps make a big difference.
1. Bring a trusted helper
A family member or one of our bilingual staff can sit in on appointments, take notes and ask questions you might not think of.
2. Ask for a professional interpreter
Alberta Health Services can provide interpreters at no cost. You have the right to ask, and we can help you request one.
3. Use the “teach-back” method
Before leaving, repeat the instructions in your own words. If something sounds wrong, the doctor can explain again.
4. Keep a picture medication chart
We help elders make simple charts with photos of each pill and the time to take it, written in Somali.
5. Practise health English
Our English circles teach the phrases you need most, like:
- “Can you please say that more slowly?”
- “What is this medicine for?”
- “I need an interpreter, please.”
