When Home Feels Heavy: Culturally Safe Help for Families Facing Domestic Problems

Families occasionally deal with domestic problems. Asking for help isn’t shameful. It is an act of courage.

Settlement stress, money worries and changing roles can put pressure on any household. Sometimes that pressure turns into fear, control or violence. Many Somali families worry that seeking help means gossip, shame or losing their children.

Signs it may be time to reach out

  • You feel afraid of a family member’s reactions.
  • Someone controls your money, phone or who you can see.
  • There are threats, pushing or other physical harm.
